How come, his plays drew the masses into the theatres? How did he manage to attract all these different groups of people with different backgrounds at the same time? These are the questions I will have in the back of my mind while writing this paper. I will examine one aspect of his style more closely, which I found in hisRomeo and Juliet.In doing so, I hope to give at least some small explanation of the reason of his overwhelming success. It was probably in 1595 when Shakespeare wrote this famous tragedy. He was doing so, living in a society which was leaving the Middle Ages far behind and rapidly growing in complexity. The English society was splitting up into a huge variety of different groups and organisations. The Reformation produced a wealth of new religious groupings. Especially the Puritans were to become very influential in England. The rise of the middle class was taking place under the reign of queen Elizabeth, which was combining artisans, merchants and the more prosperous peasants and was accumulating new resources and capital. The aristocracy was changing: It was opening up for new members, mostly wholesalers who had earned a fortune with the profitable overseas trade. The decline of the ancient system of feudalism was highly advanced, which for the common peasant meant that he wasn't tied to his small piece of soil any longer. He was much more mobile now. Family structures were changing as well. The kin (that is the enlarged family) as the main organising factor was beginning to lose ground to the smaller nuclear family.

Although data can, once put online, go viral in no time and become known to many people, there is still much effort needed to create an outstanding project which provides added value to the donor and is thus worth supporting and sharing. By far not every crowdfunding project is successful, and many fundraisers do not yet have the know-how to reach enough funders for their projects. Others even neglect to engage in crowdfunding in the first place, as new possibilities always come along with confusion and insecurity. The central aim of this thesis is therefore to examine how web-based crowdfunding projects must be designed and presented in order to satisfy prospective donors' needs. The main focus lays on the initiation of the funding process. Prospects shall be convinced to become contributors to a crowdfunding campaign in a sustainable, long-term oriented manner. In order to come to the right conclusions, it is necessary to analyze both the fundraisers' and the funders' point of view. First of all, it needs to be clarified how crowdfunding works and what possibilities there are for German fundraisers to realize their campaigns in the most satisfactory manner. Several donation-based crowdfunding platforms in Germany offer different tools and features for their users, being both fundraisers and funders. Furthermore, it will be defined who must be addressed by crowdfunding campaigns and whether these people differ from regular offline donors. To become more specific, the German donors and their preferences in giving will be investigated, concerning both offline and online fundraising. For a more profound analysis of the donors' insights, one has to go back to the very roots of charity and philanthropy: What motivates people to donate to charity? Both the funders' characteristics and the fundraisers' possibilities will be brought together when elaborating the incentives to contribute to a crowdfunding campaign. The design and content of the project page as well as the features of the crowdfunding platform should match the basic motives for becoming a donor. Some of the features already being offered by the platforms fulfill this precondition. In addition, there is potential for new tools making a contribution more probable and assuring long-term relationships to donors.

But the new media offer a different kind of way of honoring a deceased loved one. You can publish articles, countless picture, interactive guest-books and other gimmicks. But a very popular means of mourning are slideshow obituaries. A few notes concerning terminology are necessary at this point. The term obituary is traditionally used for text-only formats (sometimes including a single picture) that appear in newspapers. The slideshow obituaries of our corpus are structurally as well as content-wise very different from these. Nonetheless, we use have the term as a starting point for our paper and will use it throughout our text. One can argue that a comparison between slideshow obituaries and traditional ones is impossible because of the high discrepancies in structure and content. But our reason for omitting such a comparison is based on the fact that an analysis of this kind would have to rely primarily on linguistic aspects. The numerous pictures in slideshow obituaries would be dealt with very briefly and which does not do justice to the prominent role they play in this particular kind of text. But the 'more' of a slideshow obituary is not only the pictures. Other visuals play an important role, the layout, the hosting website. You have the freedom to use different fonts and font sizes. You can create everything from scratch or fall back on websites that provide design templates. You can add music or a voice message. The content is usually much less limited than that of a traditional obituary. This myriad of design possibilities leads to our hypothesis: we propose that, in slideshow obituaries, the different modalities - especially word and image - cannot be separated from one another. They fulfill inherently different functions and each contributes vital information to the overall product. Following this introduction, there will be a section on online obituaries. It will introduce the concept and give examples of different website providing such a service. Chapter three contains the main part of this paper; the analysis of our small corpus of slideshow obituaries. We will determine the functions of the word and the functions of the image. A comparison of these analyses will support our hypothesis. A conclusion will round off the paper and give an outlook on possible further research.
